Knocked Out a Tooth? Don’t Panic, Here’s Your Action Plan
This alarming experience was a wake-up call for me and probably is for you, too, if you’ve just knocked out a tooth. But don’t panic! With the right action plan and a little help from dental experts, you can turn a potentially alarming situation into a manageable one. Let’s walk you through what to do in case you or a loved one finds themselves in a similar predicament.
1. Locate and Handle the Tooth Correctly
It’s crucial to locate the tooth as soon as possible. However, as Dr. Evan Lenhoff, a prominent dentist based in New York City, notes, “When picking up a knocked-out tooth, always handle it by the crown (the part you bite with) and not by the root to prevent damage to the delicate fibers there.”
2. Rinse, Don’t Scrub
If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently under cold water. “Do not scrub the tooth or remove any tissue fragments, as these may be crucial for successful reattachment,” warns Dr. Bernkrant.
3. Try Re-Implantation
An interesting fact shared by Dr. Mark Wilde, a renowned endodontist, is that “If it’s an adult tooth that’s been knocked out, one of the best things you can do is try to put it back in its socket yourself.” He advises, “Ensure the tooth is facing the right way, and then try to re-insert it. But, never force it into the socket.”
4. Keep the Tooth Moist
If re-implantation isn’t possible, you need to keep the tooth moist. “Milk is a good medium,” suggests Dr. Bernkrant. Alternatively, you can use a tooth preservation product with the ADA Seal of Acceptance or place it in the mouth next to the cheek—just be careful not to swallow it!
5. Seek Immediate Dental Attention
The faster you act, the higher the chances of saving the tooth. Make an emergency appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Most dentists will consider this a critical issue and should be able to fit you in promptly.
6. Follow Aftercare Instructions
After your dentist has seen to the tooth, be sure to follow their instructions. It may involve a soft diet, avoiding touching the area, or taking certain medications. “Proper aftercare can significantly impact the success of the tooth reattachment,” says Dr. Shanna Bernkrant.
Reflecting back on my tooth debacle, I was fortunate to have friends around me who knew what steps to take. So I decided to share this with you all, creating a beneficial ripple from my moment of soccer-field misfortune.
Always remember: when it comes to knocked-out teeth, swift action and staying calm can truly make a world of difference. By following these steps, you can turn a potentially teeth-chattering experience into a story of resilience and recovery.
